The story of McLain Ward
Born in Mount Kisco, New York, and raised in Brewster, McLain Ward grew up in a family deeply connected to horses. With both parents involved in the equestrian world, riding quickly became a natural part of his life. From an early age, he showed exceptional talent and determination in show jumping.
His potential emerged remarkably early. At just 14 years old, he became the youngest rider ever to win the United States Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Derby. Only weeks later, he also captured the USET Medal Finals, becoming the first and youngest rider to win both titles in the same year.
As he moved into the senior ranks, McLain established himself among the world’s elite riders. His partnership with exceptional horses, most notably Sapphire and later HH Azur, became legendary. With Sapphire, he helped the United States win Olympic team gold medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Over the years, Ward has continued to shine on the world stage. He won the FEI Jumping World Cup Final 2017 with HH Azur and has earned multiple championship and Olympic medals. Known for his precision, speed, and consistency, he has secured victories at some of the most prestigious Grand Prix events in internationalshow jumping.
Today, based between New York and Wellington, Florida, McLain Ward remains one of the most respected riders in the sport. Through his dedication to horsemanship andlong-standing partnerships with his horses, he continues to embody excellenceat the highest level of show jumping.
Reflecting his story and philosophy, in 2018 he collaborated with CWD to create The One – The Classic bridle, a symbol of his simplicity and highly minimalist style.
